Blad
Magazines on Apple TV

A magazine reader for Apple TV.

Magazines are designed as spreads, and the TV is the one screen at home big enough to show them that way. Blad opens the magazines you already have as PDF files, from your own storage, and shows them two pages at a time in 4K.

Out now, only from the App Store on Apple TV. Blad for iPad is coming soon.

Five titles free. Then one purchase. No subscription.

Blad on Apple TV: Read Now, with the magazine you are reading and a shelf of covers
Spreads

The cover, then two pages side by side.

Blad shows the cover on its own and then two pages side by side, the way the magazine was laid out. Left and right turn the page, and nothing else is on the screen: no toolbars and no scroll bars.

Press up to see all the pages at a glance and jump straight to any spread.

Library

A shelf that keeps itself tidy.

Issues of the same magazine are gathered under one cover, with the newest first. Filter by what you have read, sort the way you like, and continue the issue you were reading straight from the Top Shelf.

With iCloud, your sources and your place follow you to the Apple TV in the next room.

Zoom

Read the small print from the sofa.

One click zooms to the width of the page, redrawn sharp in 4K. Scroll down the columns and carry on onto the next page without zooming out.

From there you can zoom closer in steps, or show the page as plain text in large type when the PDF has real text.

Getting files in

Your files stay where they are.

Blad has no store and no catalogue. It reads the files you already have, from the storage you already use, and it only ever reads: nothing in your storage is changed, deleted or shared.

  1. Get BladOpen the App Store on your Apple TV, search for Blad and download it. The download is free, and so are the first five titles you open.
  2. Connect your storageOpen Sources and pick where your files are. For cloud services you sign in on your phone with a QR code, so there is no password to type with the remote. Then choose the folders and files Blad may read.
  3. ReadYour titles appear in the library with their covers. Click one, and Blad fetches the file to the Apple TV and opens it. Next time it opens on the page you left.

Good to know

The limits, stated plainly.

Apple TV
Any Apple TV running tvOS 26 or later.
File formats
PDF (also with a password), EPUB, and comics in CBZ, CBR and CBT. Not MOBI or Kindle formats, and not comic archives that have a password, are split into several files or are packed as 7z (CB7).
Copy protection
Files with DRM cannot be opened. That rules out most e-books bought with a lock, and magazines that only live inside another reading app.
Text mode
Showing a PDF page as plain text needs a page with real text. Scanned pages have none, and in a few PDFs the fonts do not say which letters they hold; Blad then says that the text cannot be read.
Upload from a phone
Takes PDF, EPUB, CBZ and CBR files. They are kept in the app's cache on the Apple TV, which tvOS can clear when space runs low, so keep your originals.
Price
Free to download, and the first five titles are free. After that, a single in-app purchase of US$8.99 unlocks the full version, with no subscription. The price in your country is shown in the app.
Privacy
No account with us, no analytics and no advertising. Privacy policy.
Languages
The app is in English and Norwegian.
iPad and iPhone
Blad for iPad is coming soon. There is no iPhone version yet.
Questions

Good to ask.

Where do I get magazines for Blad?

Blad has no store, and comes with nothing but a short guide to the app. It reads PDF files you already have: issues you have bought or downloaded as PDF from a publisher, member and club magazines, free publications, and your own scans.

Can Blad open magazines from subscription apps?

No. Magazines in subscription services live inside those apps and cannot be opened anywhere else. Blad reads ordinary PDF files without copy protection.

How does Blad sort the issues?

It reads the name and the issue from the PDF's own title information, or from the file name, and gathers issues of the same magazine under one cover with the newest first.

Can I read magazines on Apple TV without a cloud service?

Yes. Read from a shared folder on a computer or NAS on your home network, or send PDF files straight from your phone to the Apple TV.
